History: wiki link. However, since there are multiple (largely incompatible) timelines for Eight's history, I'm going to be focusing on the timeline that follows Big Finish's audio adventures. A link to a more concise rundown of those can be found
here, and a (still incomplete) bulleted list of the more relevant events can be found
here.
Personality: The simplest way to explain the Doctor’s Eighth incarnation is to say that he is one of the chattier Doctors. He’s more often found talking to himself than not, to the point that at least one of his companions remarks that it’s entirely unlike him to be silent. He’s also prone to what is either soliloquizing or thinking aloud - he recognizes it at as a bad habit, but can never seem to manage to stop doing it either. This habit is not much helped by the fact that he has a habit of going off on tangents as they occur to him, much less the fact that he tends to have his head in the clouds at the best of times.
That said, Eight is no less brilliant than any of his other incarnation. It’s simply that this, like many other of the traits that tend to be common across multiple Doctors, tends to be very well hidden are the fact that he is not only fairly charming and polite, but also a little bit distractible at best, especially when it comes to staying on a single topic of conversion. This is not much helped by his tendency to make sweeping gestures, and the fact that he tends to get more than a little loud when he’s either angry or excited.
The audios also begin to flesh this incarnation out a little more than what had otherwise been present in the movie. It’s here that we first see that there is more to him than otherwise thought. The best example of this comes in
Seasons of Fear - when the local villain minorly injures Eight’s companion, the Doctor wastes absolutely no time in not only threatening him with more suffering than he might have wished for, but later throwing him quite literally off the top of a castle. This later proves to be one of the few things that can manage to stun him into silence - as he explains to his companion after a bit of prodding, he wasn’t at all considering that he might have
killed the man in throwing him off as he had and given his preference to avoid violence at , it disturbs him to have come so close without even thinking about it. That said, once the Doctor has decided on a course of action, he will most
certainly not give up. This is mostly in cases where the lives of people or worlds are in danger, but on least one occasion he refuses to let the villain in question - a sentient house - talk him into letting it live. Not only should the house never have been, it was also fueling it’s existence on death itself. That the life of his companion at the time also stood in the balance probably didn’t hurt either; if the Doctor truly cares for anyone, it’s the people he brings along with him.
However, the Doctor also has more than a few bad habits. The most notable of these is the fact that he seems to be almost unable to avoid helping people in need. In fact, his sense of heroism is so strong that he has made more than
one attempt to make a heroic sacrifice for the sake of his companion. This combined with Eight’s tendency to never to give up means that he is almost
exceedingly willing to help even people he’s not so much as heard of before.
That said, for all that Eight at the beginning of his life very much tends to fall on the optimistic sense of the scale, as of his canon point, events have seen him hit very
literally the point of no hope - an almost impressive feat given that Eight had previously been one of the Doctors to be the one most given to hope - and have also given him a very
distinct dislike of the Daleks, to the point that he genuinely admits to the fact that he will
gladly destroy the Daleks forever, even if it should mean breaking the very laws of time itself. While he
is pulled back from what might otherwise have been the point of no return, he falls into a dark depression shortly thereafter, and one that is certainly not helped by the arrival of the Time Lords, who promptly send him out on a Very Important Mission. Fortunately, he
does manage to find a glimmer or three of hope, and as of his current canon point is just about as recovered as he’ll ever be.
Still, the Eight who rises from the ashes isn’t quite the same as his earlier self - and likely never
will be, either. While he
is still recognizable as the Eighth Doctor, and is still by and large ever compassionate and ever willing to help (and unwilling to let his companions day), his days of hopeful optimism are long since gone, worn away by the grief and loss that caused him to come crashing down to earth quite so hard. Not that he doesn’t still try to be generally optimistic all the same, but it’s tempered by an equal measure of somber realism that sometimes borders on outright cynicism. His tendency to ramble, on the other hand, is quite entirely unaffected.
In times of strain, he also has something of a habit of resorting to sarcasm and gallows humor, largely in an attempt to distract himself from the situation at hand. Whether or not it actually
works is another matter entirely, but even at the very end of his life, it’s still very much a habit of his - as the Sisterhood of Karn would be all too glad to attest to.
Why did the CFP recruit them? The Doctor has had literal lifetimes of experience dealing with monsters, experiments gone wrong, and just simple
trouble, and has devoted a not inconsequential amount of said lifetimes working to fix the problems at hand. Additional, he speaks (or understands) a wide variety of languages, and is more familiar with highly advanced science and technology than one might immediately assume by looking at him.
Beyond that, his Time Lord biology affords him some distinct advantages as well. He's more capable of tolerating extremes of heat and cold, has a "respiratory bypass system" that allows him to go without breathing for a few moments, is capable of surviving exposure for the vacuum of space for longer than most humans would be able to, is capable of limited touch telepathy (that works best on humans or other humanoid species), and can sense the flow of time itself as well as moments when time
isn't flowing as it should be, for whatever reason. He also seems to be less affected by time being slowed down or frozen in a specific area, if that ever happens to be relevant.
Equipment: Apart from the ever-present sonic screwdriver (which looks
distinctly different from that of most of the other Doctors), Eight is pretty hands off when it comes to equipment. In a pinch, he
does have the contents of his (bigger-on-the-inside) pockets, but this runs into the twin problems of the fact that he has to have put something relevant to situation at hand into his pockets earlier and that he has to
find whatever he's looking for, which can be easier said then done. Especially if he's in a hurry.
Samples:Network Sample: If anyone should happen to see anything that looks like an ambulatory pepper pot, let me know
immediately. About so high
[he holds out a hand at roughly the four-foot mark], most likely going on about wanting to exterminate anything that got in the way. Admittedly, they shouldn't be here in the
first place, but I've been generally led to believe that's why we're here in the first place. I would also advise not approaching, if you do happen to run into one. They have something of a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later, especially when they have some sort of bee up their bonnet, which tends to be most of the time.
[A pause, as something occurs to him.]Ah, I'm the Doctor, by the way.
